My schizo theory about religious reasons for it has to do with deliberately causing trauma in infants. Infant circumcision without anesthesia has been found to cause deep neurological changes. Memory of such trauma may cause a child to be a bit more scared and withdrawn, thus more willing to trust the parents and ultimately follow the religious norms and regulations. Or maybe it's just about hygiene, ancient Jews had like 10 different degree of purity ranging from least kosher (human corpse) to most kosher (Torah if I recall) so the obsession with cleanliness kinda fits.
