How much local storage space do you have? More and more stuff gets deleted from the internet, the quality of content gets worse and worse, so I think it's increasingly sensible to save and archive stuff. I personally don't have that much storage and my setup is a bit annoying, because I basically only have external drives like a 2TB SSD, a 6TB HDD and a 8TB HDD (besides smaller internal SSDs). I haven't been able to bring myself to purchase a proper NAS setup yet.
I have a 500GB SDD and a 2TB SSD. When I move out of where I am I will get a new PC and make sure to have much more storage.
>>17699 I meant 500GB SSD.
>>17699 Who's going to cook for your sister when you move out?
>>17706 They are adults they need to learn to look after themselves.
Bernd has a 1TB SSD in his PC for games and films/series he is actually watching. Laptop has 500GB SSD for same purpose. Phone has 64GB internal and a 256GB SD for music and photos. And Bernd has a 12TB NAS. This is where Bernd archives all his stuff. The NAS is reachable from outside with a VPN on the Fritzbox (The internetrouter from the provider).
>>17724 >The internetrouter from the provider But Fritz is a third party router, right? They're not your actual ISP? Did you have any problems using a third party router?
>>17725 Bernd is Kabel Deutschland now Vodafone. You got a Fritz with the contract. Now Vodafone has that cheap boxes but Bernd still has the Fritz because you still cann chose between the cheap box and a Fritz.
I have two external 2TB HDDs. When I want to archive stuff from my local disk I move it to one of the HDDs. Once or twice a year I mirror my main HDD to the other one in case something happens to one of the HDDs. Whenever the HDD gets close to full I go through everything and delete stuff I don't think I need anymore. I also have several mirrored USB sticks for non-data intensive storage like my keyvault and documents and stuff.
Something like 15 TB if I just add everything together, but more like 8 "usable" due to RAID1 and backup disks.

3 TBs external drive that I mostly use for photos of strangers. But it's bizarre how quickly it fills.
About 300TB, most of that is currently not online though (doesn't need to be, scihub copies don't spoil). 100T sitting in a server some friends of mine host in an anonymous rack somewhere, we use it as media host and backup. The whole system used to be a 0.5PB chia farm but I sold off several of the drives and other components since.
>>18253 I hope you're archiving some good stuff with all that storage space
>>18253 >chia farm Was it worth it?
>>18267 In monetary terms, not really. But it was something to do in 2021 and it was fun going from knowing next to nothing to pretty knowledgeable and employable as storage admin within just a few months. >>18266 Well yeah, scihub (scimag). Libgen and other parts of anna's archive when I get around to it.
>>18326 Scihub hasn't been accepting new articles for a long time now, right? Most of the time when I searched for something I didn't find it there, but it's still a valuable resource of course.
>>18328 > Scihub hasn't been accepting new articles for a long time now, right Correct, the dataset hasn't updated in a while. But I'm ready for when it resumes.
>>18393 Didn’t AA also introduce the possibility to upload papers independent from scihub?
>>17697 >so I think it's increasingly sensible to save and archive stuff. Like what? I save and archive my work, and even though I work with video the space required is nanageable.
>>18963 Whatever you’re passionate about. For some it might be a certain kind of YouTube video, for some it’s obscure music or international shitposting forums. Of course the storage limitations mainly refer to video content. Video in good quality in large quantities still takes up a lot (because most stuff is still encoded in AVC).
Two 500 GB HDDs and a 2 TB SSD. I running out of space, my plan is to setup a NAS but I haven't gotten around to it. And it will likely be expensive
Around 15 TB spread across my Desktop and Laptop, around 80% filled. Will probably set up a NAS somewhat soon, 30TB drives have become affordable enough.
>>18980 How are the electricity prices in Austria
>>18976 A NAS doesn’t have to be expensive, see this thread >>14955
>>18987 A NAS that provides a huge amount of storage tends to get expensive nontheless though.
>>18984 Same as yours.
>>17697 NAS with six 10 TB drives in Raid 6, around 11 TB SSD space in my desktop and another currently unused NAS with 24 TB in HDD space.
