What's the best and easiest way to learn German for free? I'm a Brazilian, and I can't get used to those big words such as "Nahrungsmittelunverträglichkeit" ("food intolerance") when listening to people speaking the language.

>>18907 It's for ESL and mentally challenged people, I don't know if it's actually helpful. Also, the sentences are much shorter than in other news sites and they use more direct language. Book thread. What is Bernd reading? This is the first book I've tried to read in Spanish, following a pensive young man in Madrid in the years before the Spanish-American War. I don't understand 100% but it's still enjoyable. Lots of relatable bildungsruminations. Baroja is a good writer and I like exploring fin de siecle Madrid.

>>18754 >Surprisingly, the language was MUCH closer to German than it is now. Interdesting. The grammar and vocabulary aren't that different from today. Do you mean the prose style? What I notice when reading old books like that is the long sentences with many clauses and commas, and a more poetic way of describing emotions and simple events. Is modern German like that?
>>18898 >not want to integrate them as US states Being a US territory is separate from being a US state. Territories have to apply for statehood, Congress has to approve it, and once a territory becomes a state it becomes integrated into the US government and cannot leave. I don't think the Philippines ever applied for statehood. They give me a headache because they boast about how they fought the US and lost, then complain that the US didn't do enough to protect them during WW2, then complain that the US rebuilt Japan and not them after they got their independence...
>>18910 To be fair, they have a lot to be mad about. We killed up to 10% of their population in a war to conquer them after liberating them, and if you've ever played HoI4 the lack of defense of the Philippines IRL is inconceivable.

Picking up where we left off. >>225 I've obviously sung endless praises for the album Surrender, so there's no need to retread what's already been covered. Maggie Rogers's early work merits a closer look, especially The Echo, which she wrote and recorded as a high schooler. The album is standard Folk music, with its strength lying in the lyrics; rough around the edges and struggling to discover her strengths. The standout track is the closing tune, "Satellite," tastefully arranged with a piano, violin, and trumpet. Maggie croons about longing for a moment of reprieve without indulging in maudlin sentimentality. "Embers", "Wolves" and "Deep in the Earth" are also very worthy: https://maggierogers.bandcamp.com/album/the-echo Blood Ballet continues where The Echo left off. While a little more consistent, the album lacks a strong emotional centerpiece like "Satellite" which leaves me yearning for more. That said, it still features great tunes like "Resonant Body", "James", "Drift", "Little Joys", "Anybody" and, of course, the highlight "Symmetry": https://maggierogers.bandcamp.com/album/blood-ballet Finally, we have her previously unreleased Shoegaze EP that appeared on Notes from the Archive: Recordings 2011-2016. According to her commentary, the end of a two-year-long relationship inspired "Together" and likely "One More Afternoon". She still yearned to be together with her man while he chased his dreams beyond the Rockies. Thoroughly emotional and utterly engaging. Unfortunately, much of these intense emotions would be somewhat flattened on the major label debut Heard It in a Past Life and first EP Now That the Light Is Fading. Despite strong tracks like "Light On", "Fallingwater", and "Dog Years", the album suffers from sterile production values and underwhelming instrumentation. Honey, I know you've been shaking Sick and awaiting vacation But I could be your heron blue sky I could be your white night lullaby Wrap me in celadon and gold Wrap me in celadon and gold If you want me Would you call me? Would you call me? If you want me And maybe I'll wait for a cold day Shiver in sheets until you say Through your silent heat "Won't you pilot me?" Ooh, ooh If you want me Would you call me? If you want me, oh If you want me Would you call me? Would you call me? If you want me If you want me Would you call me? If you want - I was losing you in greys and blues A winter sky, I never Want to know the risk Inconsequential views, I never knew Could play that part when I was Walking through the park And I Would paint the clouds away If I could I would Take it slow walking home Remind you all that we could be Together Holding hands while marching bands sing Loud choruses of the future Together And all that's good and fine But, darling, I'm still terrified That you'll choose Los Angeles over me I'm staring at my toes If only I could make them go where'd I'd be Happy And you say That you'd never stay Wait, we could Take it slow walking home Remind you all that we could be Together Holding hands while marching bands sing Loud choruses of the future Together Together Together - [i]I never told you 'bout the green in your eyes Watching you sleep through 2008 skies But it's over Maybe some other time We always said we'd meet up in the city Tell of our lives since that virgin kiss Oh, such a long while ago in my mind First love, gone too soon I wish that I could Sit with you For one more afternoon First love, gone too fast I think of you like we were last Alive, and you're in love, and in the side One more afternoon One more afternoon One more One more One more Maybe in ten years I'll think about now And I'll learn that you're always with me somehow Always in my mind First love, gone too soon I wish that I could sit with you For one more afternoon First love, gone too fast I think of you like we were last Alive, and you're in love Alive, and you

A lot of their songs end up sounding same-y, but I appreciate anyone who puts out beautiful original music in this degraded age. This album makes me want to ride a motorcycle across the endless pampa listening to it on repeat. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FqH71p8ZmY

Hard sciences is easier than humanities because it deals only with objectivity. Meanwhile humanities deal with objectivity and subjectivity, and each subjectivity is unique, so the difficulty quickly balloons. Also, maths is the most objective form of knowledge but it's also entirely immaterial. Explain that. Is objectivity always material and subjectivity always immaterial?

>>18863 Chemistry doesn't necessarily involve people and on a molecular level things can be calculated accurately. As for biology: The S in STEM isn't even clearly defined. Maybe, maybe not. In biology and medicine there's never 100% accuracy, otherwise every crop would grow perfectly and every medical procedure would be a success. Though we can at least use percentages and go with these. Paracetamol works for 95 out of 100 people? Good enough. The same method can also be applied in humanities though. A specific psychotherapy procedure works for the big majority? The architectural sense of aesthetics is tingled in a similar way by most people? Good enough.
>>18867 Google AI says Biology is a Stem field. But also medicine and engineering aren't actually that different in the way you describe it. Yes maybe a medicine works for 95 out of 100 people but then maybe you launch 100 rockets to space and only 95 make it to orbit or maybe you build 100 sky scrapers but 5 collapse. There are variables in pretty much everything.
>>18868 It's a stem field as it is clearly a science, but it is a bit different from other stem fields. Physics and Chemistry tend to involve heavy math and focus on the mathematics of how energy and particles operate. Biology... Not as much. In my personal observations biology isn't as good of a major for career development, and tends to have a higher % of female students compared to other majors. So, it is definitely a science, and has a lot of tie ins with medicine, but doesn't focus on the math of how the world works like physics and Chemistry. Instead, it is focused one a subsection of the world, living beings.
>>18867 I think part of the problem is that science is set up to test when events are 100% certain. However organisms are set up to have a degree of randomness to them. On a macro level, brains are complex and two brains do not always think the same and act in the same way. On a micro level, DNA is designed to involve a heavy degree of randomness, essentially long code strings who's values can be easily swapped, dropped, written incorrectly, and in the case of sexual organisms, merged repeated. This makes it difficult to test anything as nothing is set in stone from a foundational level. Imagine if, in chemistry, there were molecules and the atoms were random or could change, but molecules were expected to always behave in the same way. Not going to happen!
>>18872 Yeah, that was my point. And with subjective fields of study (humanities) this degree of randomness is even greater, since no two people have the exact same experiences and history. Still, there usually is some common ground, something people as a group share (cultural, biological) that we can use percentages even here to make an assumption and "prove" it.

I couldn't find the New York election thread, it probably went past page 10. Still, I found this funny and wanted to share. Enjoy.
they had a debate this week I haven't watched yet, but news titles suggest it was fierce
People seem to care about this a lot for some reason so I looked into it and it's nothing. I don't agree with his policies but they won't actually do much and they certainly won't effect me in any way.
What happens in South Australia is more important to the world than what happens in New York. The South Australian government created the online safety act thing which got picked up by the Australian government and is now being looked at all over the world. What happens in South Australia impacts the whole world.

Dear Bernds, Ernsts, Bernst and other friends we don't know yet - in a few days it's happening: Ernstchan will be laid to rest. For background and condolences, please visit Ernstchan's /meta/ board. Here now we want to do a bit of planning, so there won't be total chaos when everyone is streaming and nobody listening. This means: 3rd of October from 0800 UTC on there will be PARTAY. How long it will last is up to you. As long as someone will stream. But for now we don't have a plan, and Bernd does not feel like making a proper running order or schedule. So we will do the following: EVERY STREAMER PLEASE ANNOUNCES THEIR STREAM(S) ON THE CALENDAR. PLEASE CHECK WHAT SLOT IS ALREADY TAKEN. FIRST COME FIRST SERVE. In case any further coordination should be necessary (such as someone needs a spot very dearly because of RL stuff (shame on you!)), you can use this thread. Used to work with the EC festivals at least. So, let's have a great festival, Radio Free Krautchan!
